Michael Dutton

Founding Fellow

Michael holds a chair in politics at Goldsmiths College, London, and is presently on a two-year appointment as a research professor at Griffith University. His research is marked by a strong interest in contemporary social and cultural theory wedded to a specific “archive” called China. Michael delights in saying that his work is often rejected by China specialists but his book Policing Chinese Politics: A History was awarded the 2007 Leveson Prize for scholarship on China. His current interests include the politics of the gift, the friend/enemy distinction and the importance of everyday life in the flow of politics. Together with Phillip Darby, Michael founded the Institute in 1996.
