This is a study of the relationship between textual and photographic representations and the different patterns of rule established by the United States over Cuba, Guam, Hawai’i, the Philippines and Puerto Rico in the aftermath of the Spanish-American war of 1898. The author teaches at the University of Puerto Rico.
